Investing on Your Teeth, Your Most Important Accessory

Many people buy different accessories like jewelry, scarves, and headpieces to make them feel extra special. Others accessorize because they feel complete with these items; it is a way to express themselves.

By these definitions, you can say that your teeth are an accessory too. Having strong and healthy teeth makes it easier for a person to smile more and be more confident. Having a unique set of healthy teeth makes a person more complete and comfortable with their appearance.

Teeth as an Accessory

Whether people admit it or not, everyone loves perfect, healthy teeth; those who do not have such suffer from low self-esteem. They feel less comfortable smiling and interacting with other people.

Moreover, people usually judge others based on appearances. This is also known as the halo effect. This theory states that people have a cognitive bias that attractive people have better mental and social attributes. It is not always true. However, some people are affected by this unconscious perception.

Therefore, whether you like it or not, appearances are always important. This is why some people accessorize to make them more appealing to other people. This is also why keeping healthy-looking teeth is essential to positively affect people’s perception.

Why do you have to appeal to other people’s perceptions? The fact is that human beings are all still social beings. People do not live by themselves. As much as you try to avoid interacting with other people, it is almost impossible.

Interacting with people is essential when you go to your job or try to get a higher-paying one. When you get services that you cannot do independently, you still have to talk to other people.

Benefits of Healthy Teeth

Having healthy teeth benefit people’s lives immensely. By having healthy pearly whites, a person can interact with other people and attain the job they want. Therefore, you can say that having healthy teeth improve one’s life.

Moreover, healthy teeth allow you to smile more. Smiling has many benefits, including making a person look more approachable, improving relationships, and reducing stress. With that in mind, here are a few benefits smiling has for you:

  • A smile makes you more approachable: As they say, smiling is infectious; studies have proved this to be true. The human brain is programmed so that when a person smiles, the other person interacting will mirror the same behavior. This predominantly affects how you form bonds and relationships with other people.

  • A smile helps release good hormones: When a person smiles, your brain releases three hormones—namely, dopamine, endorphins, and serotonin. These hormones are responsible for making you feel happy. When you smile and feel happy, your brain releases these hormones to make you happier. Studies reveal that a smile is comparable to eating 2,000 chocolate bars. Chocolates are said to release happy hormones. However, smiling is better because it will not ruin your diet.
  • A smile improves relationships: People have an impression that a person who constantly smiles is kind. Kindness is always crucial in everyday life, being approached by other people, and developing relationships. In couples, studies have found that relationships have been formed during positive interactions on their first meeting. A positive interaction usually involves smiling and lots of laughter; these are essential to developing closeness among couples.

Taking Care of Teeth

Apart from brushing your teeth, you must use mouthwash and floss regularly. But to have a well-defined dental plan, you’ll also need to visit your dentist at least once a year. The easiest way to know the status of your teeth is to visit a dental clinic like Metro Dental or other clinics close to you. The National Institute on Aging also gives a few suggestions on how you can clean your teeth and gums.

Dentists suggest that a person should brush their teeth at least twice a day. A toothpaste containing fluoride protects the teeth. A soft-bristle brush is preferred so it does not damage the teeth. Furthermore, you must replace your toothbrush every three to four months so that it does not lose its efficacy.

When brushing your teeth, you must lubricate the brush with water and put a pea-sized amount of toothpaste on top. You must brush your teeth at a 45-degree angle from the gums and in a circular motion. Moreover, make sure to brush hard-to-reach areas as they also collect food particles.

After brushing, make sure to floss. This helps you get the food particles out of the edges of the teeth, preventing the accumulation of bacteria and tooth decay.

As much as you want to invest in the latest or most fancy accessory, make sure to prioritize investing in your teeth and your entire body. Though you can replace teeth through cosmetic dentistry, your originals are always better.
